Exiting the crest of sunlight between storm clouds, two strongly pitched ships narrowly escape the wisps of sea spray born from the turbulence of the tides. what could be interpreted as escape, to me, is a humble forfeiture of the spotlight, making way for the movement of the ocean beneath. the importance of the human is second to the divine. a beautiful chaos erupts, as a seagull just barely caught in the sunlight glides effortlessly towards clearer skies despite the unrest below.

Chiaroscuro is an Italian phrase used to describe the creation of three dimensionality through contrast of light and dark. Ivan Aivazovsky’s 1860 painting ‘Ships in a Storm’ utilizes this effect to accentuate the bright crests of waves, staged affront the shadow of the oceans depth. This painting was one of countless Aivazovsky works used to inform the mood and design decisions for this collection. Deep indigo paired with golden and beige accents repurposes this classical painting technique for the modern age, while bringing denim into the classics. The garments pay homage to the waves in their tidal movement, with leading lines interrupted by other leading lines from the same garment. Pattern manipulation through interrupted seams on some garments leads to increased drama through redundant fabric.

Traditional collared shirts lie unbuttoned, freeing the neck and encompassing the shoulders. Silhouettes of classical tailoring are interrupted by Silk Taffeta Ascotts - pops of iridesent colors in a textile weaved of two different shades of thread into nippy fabrics. Adorned in variants of these ingredients, the spectrum of looks act as a painterly study of the same subject. Viewed from different perspectives, lightings and moods. Some garments pulling themselves closer to the body, while others seek to escape to their own shapes. This balancing act is what breathes life into Chiaroscuro.
